Choosing a Career- One of the most important decisions you make…………we are here to help!
Choosing or changing your career is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life. These decisions guide the course of your life and determine not only where you spend your time and how much money you will earn but the type of people you will spend time with and the level of fulfillment and happiness you will experience.
Determining the course of your life should not be taken lightly yet many people just assume they will find their path. You likely would not go on a vacation without a investigating your options and planning, so why choose your major or career path without a plan.
Career testing and consultation provide the support and guidance that will help you make informed decisions.
Career assessments are tools that are designed to help individuals understand how a variety of personal attributes (i.e., data values, preferences, motivations, aptitudes and skills), impact their potential success and satisfaction with different career options and work environments.
Types of career assessments
Career assessments come in many forms and vary along several dimensions. The assessments selected will vary depending on your personal beliefs regarding the most important criteria when considering career choices, as well as your unique needs and abilities.
Methodology – some assessments are quantitative in nature and precisely measure key attributes believed to influence your potential success and satisfaction with a career. Others are qualitative exercises designed to help you clarify your goals and preferences, which can then be used to make more informed career decisions.
Measured attributes – assessments vary with regard to the specific personality attributes measured. Some assessments focus on your interests, and perhaps aptitude, while others focus on skills or values.
Validity – many assessments, particularly those offered on the internet, lack evidence for “validity,” which is the degree to which interpretation of the results of the assessment or decisions made from the results are useful. When the validity of the assessment for its intended purpose cannot be evaluated, results should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
Some assessments found on the internet are designed to serve broad markets (i.e., virtually any individual choosing a vocational program or Career Clusters, starting their career or considering a career change. While these tests or assessment tools can be useful, they do not provide valid results customized for your needs. The American Psychological Association’s ethics code indicates that psychologists using those tests clearly explain the limitations of the tests to their clients.
How Does a career assessment work ?
First you will have a comprehensive interview with trained career counselor and a psychologist who is trained in career counseling. This is a crucial first step in helping to select and integrate tests selection and results into the broader context of your passions, personality, culture and goals.
Career assessments are designed to discover the skills, aptitude and talents of candidates. A self-assessment can be a useful tool in assessing the areas in which a candidate has strengths and limitations. The results can be useful in helping candidates to choose a career that is in tune with their goals and talents. Research has shown that these types of assessments have been proven to introduce more career options, increase satisfaction in one’s career plan and increase the understanding of oneself.
After your comprehensive interview specific assessments will be chosen to meet your personalized goal. You will complete the assessments that have been selected for you. This may take two to five hours depending on your goals.
After you have completed the assessments a report will be prepared. This may take about a week. You will return to the office and discuss your results with the career counselor or psychologist. A sample report is attached below.
